Washington Closure Hanford Environmental Protection and Compliance Policy
The Washington Closure Hanford environmental policy provides project managers with clear direction in considering the environmental aspects and impacts associated with their work to clean up Hanford’s River Corridor. The Environmental Protection and Compliance Policy (PM-ESHQ-2) commits to continual environmental improvement, waste minimization, pollution prevention, and compliance with applicable laws and regulations relating to Washington Closure’s cleanup activities at Hanford.
The company communicates the benefits of compliance with environmental policy to Washington Closure and subcontractor employees, as well as the potential negative impacts of departing from the policy. The policy also is posted on the company’s external web site.
The significant environmental aspects of work on the River Corridor Closure Project include:
- Atmospheric emissions – radioactive and non-radioactive
- Liquid discharges to the soil or Columbia River – radioactive and non-radioactive
- Potential disturbance of endangered species and sensitive habitats
- Waste generation – hazardous and radioactive, but not solid waste, such as office waste
