Smith named River Corridor D4 director

Washington Closure Hanford has appointed Bobby D. (Bob) Smith director of D4 for the River Corridor Closure Project. He is responsible for the decommissioning, deactivation, decontamination and demolition of 486 buildings at Hanford.
Most of the facilities are radioactively contaminated or contaminated with materials such as lead, beryllium, mercury, asbestos and other hazardous substances. Smith has 24 years of experience in nuclear facility startup, maintenance, operations and D&D dating back to 1984.
Before joining Washington Closure, Smith worked for Washington Savannah River Company as Area Project Manager for the H Area Material Disposition Program at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site in Aiken, South Carolina. He has worked for WSRC and its predecessor, Westinghouse Savannah River Company, since 1990.
Smith served as a U.S. naval officer in the Navy Nuclear Propulsion Program from 1984- 1990.
Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1984 at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He is a certified member of the Project Management Institute and the National Management Association.
Washington Closure manages the River Corridor Closure Project for the DOE’s Richland Operations Office at the 586-square-mile Hanford Site in southeastern Washington state. It is responsible for cleaning up 370 contaminated waste sites, demolishing 486 buildings and operating the Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility. Washington Closure expects to finish cleanup work on the $2.2 billion project in 2015.
