Jeff Armatrout named Waste Operations Director for Washington Closure
RICHLAND, Wash.—Washington Closure Hanford has named Jeffrey F. Armatrout as its Director of Waste Operations. He is responsible for managing the Waste Operations organization, as well as the Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility (ERDF) and its supporting operations.
Armatrout has served as ERDF’s operations manager since 2007, overseeing the facility’s day-today operations.
ERDF is Hanford’s onsite landfill for low-level, radioactive and hazardous mixed waste. The facility receives most of the contaminated soil, demolition debris, and solid waste from cleanup operations across the 586-square-mile Hanford Site. To date, Hanford cleanup workers have placed more than 12 million tons of waste in the facility for disposal.
Armatrout earned his bachelor’s degree in construction management from Washington State University. In 1981, he joined Bechtel Power Corporation in Richland. He worked at several sites throughout the country before returning to Richland with Bechtel in 1995 as a supervisor and later a manager in project controls. He transferred to Washington Closure in 2005 as a project controls supervisor for the Decommissioning, Deactivating, Decontaminating and Demolishing (D4) Closure Project.
Washington Closure Hanford manages the 220-square-mile River Corridor Closure Project for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Richland Operations Office. The $2.3 billion River Corridor Closure Project is the largest environmental cleanup closure project in the nation.
Washington Closure is responsible for demolishing 328 contaminated buildings, cleaning up 560 waste sites, placing two surplus plutonium production reactors and one nuclear facility in interim safe storage, and managing ERDF. Washington Closure is a limited liability company owned by URS, Bechtel National and CH2M Hill.
